Punjab’s Chief Minister has opened a program offering 100,000 free solar panels to middle-class families across the province. With inflation making it harder to manage utility bills, this initiative is a step toward providing relief to citizens.
The government wants to make the process easy by introducing an online portal and an SMS code for eligible consumers. This program also lightens the federal government’s burden of providing subsidies on electricity bills.
Here’s a look at how you can apply for this program and get your free solar panels.
100,000 Free Solar Panel Distribution in Punjab
On December 6, Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif unveiled the 100,000 Free Solar Panels Program. The new project will reduce electricity costs for low-income households by providing solar panels at no charge.
The scheme is open to households using up to 200 units of electricity per month. With the installation of solar panels, these families will receive long-term savings on their bills. The government promised to install 100,000 solar systems in the province within a year.
Last Chance to Register: January 5
Registration for the free solar panels is now open, but you’ll need to act fast. The deadline is January 5, 2025. Any applications submitted after this date won’t be processed.
At the launch ceremony, the Chief Minister explained how you can register for the solar panels. You can apply easily from the comfort of your home via an online portal or by sending an SMS.
Online Application Via Govt Official Portal
The government has set up a dedicated portal for the CM Solar Panel Scheme, making the application process simple if you have internet access.
If you want to apply, visit cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk website. There, you’ll find detailed instructions on how to proceed. Applicants will need to enter their CNIC and electricity bill reference number for verification. Once verified, the system will randomly select applicants through a transparent computerized ballot.
To protect against theft the government will link each solar panel and inverter to the beneficiary’s CNIC.
How to Apply via SMS
If you don’t have internet availability, you can still apply for the solar panels by sending an SMS. Simply text your CNIC and electricity bill reference number to 8800. You’ll receive a confirmation message with your application details.
Eligible Families for the Maryam Nawaz Solar Panel Program
The scheme distributes solar systems based on electricity usage:
- Households using up to 100 units per month will get a 550-watt solar system, with 52,019 panels available.
- Households using up to 200 units per month will get a 1,100-watt solar system.
Environmental Impact: 57,000 Tons of Carbon Emissions Saved
Not only will this initiative reduce electricity costs for families, but it will also have a positive environmental impact. The installation of 100,000 solar systems is expected to cut carbon emissions by around 57,000 tons annually. This contributes to Punjab’s efforts to promote green energy and sustainability.
Financial Relief for 73 Lakh Electricity Consumers
The Punjab government is also offering a Rs 14 per unit subsidy on electricity bills for 73 lakh consumers. This subsidy, combined with the solar panel scheme, will help reduce the financial burden on families and ease the pressure on the federal government.
Assistance Line for Solar Systems Distribution
Though the helpline for the solar panel scheme has not yet launched, we’re working on it. The government will soon provide a dedicated assistance line to help address any queries about the program.
